Byres Road University Avenue Project

Introduction and Overview

Thenew was formed in 1979 and our function was to provide development and management services to new and established housing associations and co-operatives.

Workspace Hsg Project

This services and consultancy work remains a significant activity for Thenew Housing Services and we have provided assistance in the last 26 years to numerous associations, co-ops, local authorities and other bodies.

Approximately 15 years ago we decided to undertake our own development programme to fill a niche and meet evident need for the provision of supported housing for particular needs.  Under this heading a range of special needs projects was completed. Later developments of a substantial scale have been aimed towards community regeneration. We have also expanded dramatically through stock acquisition and transfers of engagements.

We now own and/or manage over 3000 houses: around 2,526 self-contained houses and flats to rent, 22 hostels and supported housing projects providing 145 bedspaces, around 80 shared ownership dwellings and we factor an additional 600. The stock is a mixture of Victorian sandstone tenements including a few listed buildings, interwar flats, and new build houses and flats built between the late 1970s and the present day. Most of the housing is located in six communities in Glasgow but some properties are scattered in other parts of Glasgow and the west of Scotland.

We are registered under the Industrial & Provident Societies Acts and with Communities Scotland. We are recognised as a Scottish Charity and we obtained charitable status on 7th January 2002. We are an Investor in People accredited organisation and we gained that accreditation in November 2006.
