Community Involvement & Wider Role
We believe we are more than just a landlord - taking care of the bricks and mortar.
People are important to us! We believe that by working at the heart of the local community we can help make a positive difference to the social aspects of the community – not just the properties.
We have worked on a number of projects over the last few years.
The ideas and projects have been very varied – in terms of the scale and the location – the ideas arose from the local communities in which we work.
They ranged from simple things like organising day trips for our older tenants to family bus trips. From producing a video, creating eight apprenticeship jobs in Cranhill, developing youth shelters to employing our own youth workers in Castlemilk.
We also work in partnership with other organisations, eg. to develop Bridgeton Community Learning Campus, and the proposed new centre in Drumchapel along with One Plus, Health Board and Communities Scotland.
We provide training for people who want careers in housing – through agencies like Castlemilk Economic Development Agency – all of those who have been on placement with us over the last two years have successfully found jobs.
We have also just created a new post – Financial Inclusion Officer – to tackle welfare rights issues and to provide access to better financial services for our tenants.
Funding
We set aside a budget for each area each year to support our local area associations and other local community groups.
If you want to know how you can access this funding from Thenew please contact us by e-mail or call Alison Kevan, our Performance & Participation Manager direct on 0141 550 7224.
Partnership
This year we submitted funding application for up to £500,000 of funding for local projects to Communities Scotland and GHA. Thanks to their support we can employ our own youth workers in Castlemilk, build the youth shelter in Blackhill, as well as develop facilities like those mentioned above in Bridgeton and Drumchapel.
Inter-Agency Work
We are a founder member of the East End Housing Association Regeneration Forum and are pleased to be working with Milnbank, Parkhead, Tollcross and Shettleston Housing Associations. One of our priorities over the next year will be to develop work and training opportunities for local people.
Further Information
If you or your group want to know more about wider role activities and have some ideas you want to explore contact Margaret Prior, our Community Regeneration Manager direct on 0141 550 7239.
Regeneration in the East End of Glasgow
Over the next few years the East End of Glasgow will be affected in a major way by several large-scale regeneration projects. It is vital the East End Communities are well placed to grasp the opportunities that this regeneration will create. The East End Housing Associations Regeneration Forum (EEHARF) is an initiative by five Registered Social Landlords (RSLs) to expand their role in delivering Wider Community Regeneration. The five housing associations are:
• Thenew Housing Association
• Shettleston Housing Association
• Milnbank Housing Association
• Tollcross Housing Association
• Parkhead Housing Association
The forum will operate as a single point of contact to promote communication, participation and joint working in Community Planning and to develop community initiatives that will address the issues of unemployment, lack of educational attainment, financial exclusion and poor health.
