Low Cost Home Ownership - Homestake
"Homestake" is a fairly new scheme aimed at helping people on low incomes who want to own their own homes but who cannot afford to pay the full price. It is aimed at first-time buyers but also others whose life circumstances have changed, for example, people affected by marital breakdown. The scheme has been designed flexibly so that it can also be used to assist disabled people and older people access more suitable housing. A Homestake owner will generally pay for between 60% and 80% of the price of a property with the remainder held by Thenew using Homestake grant funding. We are developing some 30 units in Cranhill for "Homestake" as part of our £3.2m contract with JB Bennett, due for completion in the Autumn of 2007.
Communities Scotland has produced two brochures with further information about Homestake: "Helping you to become a home owner" gives information about the scheme and "about the Homestake open market scheme" gives some information about the pilot Homestake scheme running in Edinburgh and the Lothians which allows people to buy homes that are for sale on the open market. If you think you meet the income and eligibility criteria for the open market scheme, you can also download an application form. Click here to go straight to Communities Scotland website.

Shared Ownership
Shared Ownership allows you to own a share of your home, leaving the remaining share to rent from us. The share you choose to purchase can vary between 25%, 50% and 75%, depending on your own individual circumstances.
The table below shows the number of shared ownership properties, however please note that none of these properties are currently available.

Right to Buy
On 30 September 2002 the Scottish Secure Tenancy came into force. It replaced the previous secure and assured tenancies which applied to all our tenants. The Scottish Secure Tenancy provides a single, common tenancy for virtually all our tenants and brought with it quite significant changes to the Right to Buy. If you are one of our tenants you may have the legal right to buy your home at discount. However, the precise details of your Right to Buy will be determined by the particular circumstances of your tenancy including when your tenancy started. Our website aims to give advice on buying your home under the Right to Buy, however it is not a complete and authoritative statement of the law. Click here for our information and advice on Right to Buy.
If you have any questions about your own case, contact us and we can give you specific information that relates directly to you.
